Croatia: Rijeka

I think most people have a certain idea of Croatia, even if they haven’t been there. Beaches, red roofs, loads of islands and no shortage of parties. I’ve got to say, the stereotype isn’t wrong. Obviously there’s a lot more to Croatia than the above, but I didn’t spend a lot of time away from the water. My mission was to get from Budapest to Rijeka, where I would catch up with  a couple of friends of mine. Even though Croatia borders Hungary, there aren’t a […]

Hungary: Budapest, Part 2

If you’re reading this, hopefully you’ve had a quick geeze through part 1. Some of the best parts of travelling solo involve catching up with friends from home, or visiting another spot with someone you’ve met along the way. A good friend of mine had a few days off work and wanted to visit Budapest, and I happened to be there at the same time so that worked out well! Budapest are bidding for the 2024 Olympics. My list of things to do coincided with a lot […]

Hungary: Budapest, Part 1

Nobody I know who has ever visited Budapest has said they’ve had anything other than an excellent time. As such, I was looking to visiting the renowned capital of Hungary, and although I didn’t see much of the rest of the country (extortionate prices in other areas of interest due to peak season), at least I feel like I’ve given Budapest a good floggin.’ Budapest is known as a party spot for backpackers. Whilst I enjoy a beer or ten, I opted to flag staying […]

Austria: Vienna

Wien! I took another cheap, lush bus (these things are like planes, with your own screens in the head rests and all) to Vienna the day Dad left Prague. Although I wanted to see more of Austria, I’m going to have to leave places like Hallstatt for later on as I can’t fit everything in! When travelling Europe by land, you don’t go through any sort of border stop or customs check. I took the photo above when my GPS told we we were crossing […]

Czech Republic: Prague, Part 2

I’ve been travelling solo for around six months at this point, so when my Dad called and told me he was heading over to the Netherlands for my cousin’s wedding and asked if I’d like some company in Prague for my birthday, I was stoked! Naturally I asked for some rations to be brought over from New Zealand, and the man delivered. I am pretty sure I’m the only person here in Austria with Marmite. We spent a lot of time cruising around the city […]

Czech Republic: Prague, Part 1

Prague! I’ve heard so many good things about this place, in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to someone who didn’t wholeheartedly enjoy their time there. Prague is one of those cities that has something for everyone; cheap beer, amazing views, good coffee, great food, amazing architecture, the list goes on. I planned on checking out a couple of places like Brno and Cesky Krumlov on the way to Prague from Bratislava, but truth be told, I felt like keeping my feet in one […]

Slovakia: Spis Castle and Bratislava

Rather than heading from Poland straight to Prague as most people seem to do, I decided to pay Slovakia a visit. It’s one of those places that most people tend to skip when travelling through Europe, but I could afford the time so figured I may as well check it out. Taking the local bus over the Tatras from Poland, I was greeted by some pretty sweet scenery as we drove on to a place called Poprad. I chose to spend a night in Poprad as […]

Poland: Zakopane and the Slovakian Border

When I was looking to leave Krakow, I took a look at what I wanted to see nearby. Having done a bit of reading into what there is to do in Slovakia, I began looking at a path from Krakow to Bratislava that didn’t involve a direct bus or train. After getting a recommendation from my Canadian friend I met in L’Viv, I settled on heading out of the country via a town named Zakopane. I took a cheap bus from Krakow which was comfortable, […]

Poland: Krakow and Auschwitz

Commencing the next point of my zigzag through Europe, I took an overnight train from L’Viv in Ukraine to Krakow, Poland. This was a silly idea. Firstly, it was ridiculously expensive, compared to other options which I didn’t research properly due to time constraints. Secondly, because of the departure time, customs check and change of time zone meant I got about 3 hours sleep before being tapped on the foot for the third time by the conductor who shouted at me, “Get up tourist, train […]

Ukraine: L’Viv

When going overseas on holiday, taking a break from ordinary life and jumping on a plane to escape to another land for a few weeks, there’s always a stark contrast between the two countries. Everything is usually a complete change, which is why you go there. On the other hand, when on a long trip, trekking between nations and losing track of how many borders you’ve crossed, it becomes somewhat easier for each destination to merge into one big mural, as opposed to separate portraits. […]
